The Diesel Emission Reduction Act (DERA) is a federal program aimed at reducing harmful emissions from older diesel engines. Administered by the U.S Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), DERA provides funding for projects that upgrade or replace diesel engines with cleaner, more efficient technologies and reduce the environmental impact of non-road and on-highway diesel vehicles.
Diesel engines are a major source of air pollution, especially in low-income and underserved communities. DERA helps tackle this issue by supporting the adoption of cleaner fuels, such as biodiesel, renewable diesel, electricity and compressed natural gas (CNG), which significantly reduce emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx), particulate matter (PM) and other pollutants. Fleets may apply for funding through the DERA program by submitting a fleet application to the American Lung Association. Funding through this program is not guaranteed and depends upon the availability of funding from the USEPA.
