A recent report by Clean Fuels Alliance America sheds light on the growing economic role of biodiesel and renewable diesel in the U.S. energy sector. With production steadily increasing and domestic investments accelerating, the report highlights the broad impacts clean fuels are having across industries, rural economies, and local job markets.
The U.S. currently produces around 5 billion gallons of clean fuels annually, with an additional 900 million gallons imported. The production of biodiesel and renewable diesel uses U.S.-grown crops such as soybeans, creating a reliable revenue stream for oilseed farmers. In total, clean fuel production supports 30,600 jobs and $15.2 billion in economic activity related to agriculture. This economic activity not only supports farmers but also strengthens the financial foundation of rural regions.
The potential for further growth is substantial. With current and planned investments, U.S. production could reach 7.5 billion gallons in the coming years. That increase could deliver $60.25 billion in economic activity, create 145,700 jobs, and result in $7.6 billion in wages to American workers. The report emphasizes that these gains are not speculative — they are based on projects already underway.
North Dakota is playing a key role in this clean fuels expansion. According to the report, clean fuel activity in the state accounts for $3.1 billion in economic impact and supports approximately 9,100 jobs. As a major agricultural state, North Dakota is well-positioned to continue benefiting from investments in biodiesel and renewable diesel.
