The North Dakota Department of Commerce is accepting applications for a suite of energy efficiency funding opportunities aimed at helping communities modernize infrastructure, reduce energy costs, and improve building performance. Together, these programs are designed to provide flexible resources that help local entities plan and implement projects that improve energy efficiency, operational performance, and long-term cost savings across North Dakota.
Eligible Applicants Include
- Cities, counties, and other political subdivisions
- Schools and state agencies
- Nonprofit organizations
- Smaller cities and counties (for select programs)
Funding opportunities vary by program and include:
- State Energy Program (SEP): Grants ranging from $7,500 to $75,000 for energy audits, efficiency upgrades, and educational activities; a 20% match is generally required. Applications are due by March 1, 2026, for the 2026 SEP plan.
- Energy Efficiency Community Block Grant (EECBG): Supports building retrofits, streetlight upgrades, and EV charging stations in smaller cities and counties; no match required and applications are accepted until funds are expended.
- Energy Conservation Grant (ECG): Typically used for LED lighting upgrades by local governments; covers up to 50% of project costs, capped at $100,000, with applications accepted year-round.
- Energy Efficiency Revolving Loan (EERLF): Provides financing for efficiency upgrades recommended through an energy audit where projected savings exceed project costs.
